Scott Hundson, an incoming freshman to J.P. Zenger High School, get's the shock of his life, high school. He's speachless even before walking into the school after seeing an old class mate, Julia Baskins, looking more stunning than ever. Now Scott tries catching her eye in everyway possible. He joins student council, the school play, and becomes a reporter for the Zenger Gazette all of which in vain. He ends up seeing the girl he loves going out with the school's staring quarterback, Vernon. While Scott's dealing with his own problems, his his three closest friends Scott, Mitch, and Patrick, go their own ways. Almost immediately, Mitch get's a girlfriend, Kyle joins the wrestling team, and Patrick moves to Texas and then from there to Japan. This permanently scars Scott's ability to make friends, until Scott meets Lee, an unusual girl who is new to the school. She has dyed hair and piercings from head to toe. In spite of this, Scott finds that he has much in common with Lee, mostly their love of litterature. Another "interesting" friend Scott made was Wesley Cobble, the school bully. They became friends when Wesley begins offering rides to Scott, for no apparent reason. After Scott witnesses Wesley commit multiple crimes, from speeding, to stealing. After this Scott makes it his job to try and straighten out Wesley's life. Scott Hudson isn't the only one struggling to make friends. Louden, called Mouth by his classmates because of his constant need to talk, seemed to just naturally repel people. Constant rejection pushed Mouth past his limit, convincing him to take desperate measures, which would change his life forever. Scott, one of the few that didn't completely reject Mouth, regreted that he hadn't stood up for him when he was insulted and ignored. This was a coming of age moment for Scott because he realizes that he needs to change his priorities. Things aren't easy for Scott at home either. First of all, Scott's mother finds out she's pregnent with they baby that he believes, will replace him. Secondly, Scott's brother, Bobby who just recently came home, mysteriously dissapears to join back with his band. This leaves Scott no one to ask for high school advice. Although Scott suffered through many struggles in high school, everything turns out alright for Scott Hudson.
